A deal has been reached between Israel and Egypt, with assistance from the United States, for the release of Ilan Grapel from Egypt in exchange for 25 Egyptians being held in Israel. Grapel is an American student from Queens who also is an Israeli citizen. He was accused of spying on Egypt for Israel

On Tuesday, October 11, it was announced that Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is to be released from five years of imprisonment.

Shalit was captured as a P.O.W. by Hamas and held hostage for five years. His release was bargained with an exchange, initially requiring Israel to release 1,000 Palestinian P.O.W.s.
